Eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery (known as blepharoplasty in Latin) is the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedure. One in 7 people in the Netherlands undergo eyelid surgery. Eyelid surgery resolves the problems caused by excess skin.

Drooping eyelids can make you look tired or older than you feel    Having to make a continuous (compensatory) effort to keep your eyes open can be tiring. It can also lead to headaches and/or cause your eyes to tear. Drooping eyelids can even impair your vision.

Eyelid correction

Upper eyelid surgery involves the removal of overhanging skin. This makes your eyes look fresher and stops you feeling tired. The scar is concealed in the crease of the upper eyelid, so it is virtually invisible. The procedure can also enhance the shape of your eye.

Sagging skin and bags under your eyes can also make you look tired. This can be corrected by lower eyelid surgery.

What can you expect?

During the initial consultation, the plastic surgeon will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for eyelid correction. Eyelid surgery is not always the best solution. The initial consultation is always conducted by the plastic surgeon who will perform the treatment. During the initial consultation, you are provided with detailed information about the procedure.
The plastic surgeon will also advise you on how much improvement you can expect to see as a result of the surgery. This advice will depend on the diagnosis.

At this point, you may wish to schedule a procedure. We usually have relatively short waiting lists. Before commencing the procedure, the plastic surgeon carefully marks out the area of excess skin. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and you are told what is happening at each stage so you always know what to expect. Our plastic surgeons use diathermy techniques, so there is very little bleeding. The wound is then closed with a suture. The stitching is done in such a way that the skin knits together neatly and the stitches are easy to remove. We give you a cold gel eye mask to take home with you if you wish 2.

Eyelid surgery

Before the eyelid surgery, we take photos for your medical records. The plastic surgeon carefully marks out the area of overhanging skin that can be removed from your eyelid. Eyelid surgery is performed under local anaesthetic and is usually completed in approximately 30 minutes. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon makes an incision in the upper or lower eyelid and removes excess skin, fat and possibly muscle tissue. The wound is then carefully stitched and protected with small plasters. A cold gel eye mask is applied to cool the skin Upper and lower eyelid surgery can also be performed during the same procedure.

After eyelid surgery

You can leave the clinic with an escort shortly after the procedure.  Your eyelids may be slightly bruised and swollen for the first week after the surgery. The technique used by our plastic surgeons ensures that this is minimal. Procedures are always performed with a very fine bipolar diathermy instrument. This minimises subcutaneous bleeding (which results in bruising). The cold gel eye mask we give you to take home with you can help to alleviate these symptoms. In some cases your eyes may feel slightly dry, or, alternatively, they may be watery. This will resolve within a few weeks. A week after the procedure you return to the clinic to have the stitches removed. The improvement will already be noticeable and your appearance will continue to look fresher in the weeks that follow.

You can book a no-obligation initial consultation appointment with our plastic surgeon.
